happy birthday smiley?

Seems there's some controversy over when the emoticon, or commonly known, smiley was born. Some credit a professor at Carnegie Mellon University as the creator of the smiley in 1982. Others say the emoticon was penned, not keyed, in the 60's appearing in an issue of Reader's Digest. You can read more about the debut of the smiley controversy here...
